Shit, meet fan.
Wikipedia is pulling their plug on Wednesday to stop the PROTECT IP act. They are not the only site. This is a big deal, and companies are wasting millions of dollars worth of up-time to call our attention to it. Repeat, lots of people are in on this. Many of the protesting websites would even be illegal to operate under the proposed laws.
Look it up. Think about it. Call...
Expand Your (Star Wars) Universe →
stasischamber:
As young fanatics many Star Wars enthusiasts are eager to learn as much as they can about the environment of one of the most painstakingly-, and lovingly-, developed fantasy worlds ever created. My bookshelf still has an entire section dedicated to books that outline the background of the franchise: the ships, weapons, locales, and people of the “expanded universe” that...

Many of us have read enough Orwell and enough cyberpunk to know that control over information and our thoughts is an important modern issue. Apparently a hacker group in Germany is being a bit more pragmatic with their solution.
"After Life" by Simon Frank →
stasischamber:
To this day, taking on the role of our modern day philosophical texts, literature in science fiction asks: just what comprises human consciousness? More specifically, what happens to our human minds once you extract us from our human bodies?
Simon Frank gives a set of hypothetical answers to this question in “After Life,” a mind-bending story of the first human to digitize...

GTD and Moleskine →
Or, “I Bought a Moleskine and Am Desperately Trying to Justify It” Lately I’m reading Getting Things Done, making to-do lists, and more generally trying to keep my crap together. It’s a little weird pursuing a career that is directly tied to the most distracting object in the house. Maybe I can offset that a bit, now.
Edit: Lifehacker, where you at!!?

God help me for linking to lifehacker, but you really really should hear about this. For better or worse, most of what you do on your smartphone is monitored. If you’re worried, there are tips here to circumvent it.
Infosec guys: I know we hear a lot about smartphone security concerns lately, but how worried should we be about this one in particular? Hit me up.

False Starts
Oh Tumblr. I should use you. Not like that. Well, maybe.
I’m at a point in my life where I have a lot more time on my hands now and I’m figuring what to do with it. On the one hand, I’m glad I wrote that followup to my saga of connection routing scripts, but sidestep now runs happily in my top bar and it’s officially Somebody Else’s Problem now. Feels good, man....

Did You Hate Making Those Scripts I Posted? Use... →
“When Sidestep detects you connecting to an unprotected wireless network, it automatically encrypts all of your Internet traffic and reroutes it through a secure connection to a server of your choosing, which acts as your Internet proxy. And it does all this in the background so that you don’t even notice it.
With Sidestep enabled, no one can eavesdrop on your traffic and...
Oh Man
It’s been a few seconds. I’ve been doing interesting things, I promise! I might broaden the diversity of posts in this blog to correctly reflect where I’ve been productive in my life and maybe leave a certain second unnecessary tumblr by the wayside.

Getting the Mouse out of My Life and Other...
I’ve had a mouse-shaped ball and chain ever since I was about five. The mouse stopped having a ball since about 2003, but you get the metaphor. My mouse has caused me considerable hand cramping in my years of using it. If you’re looking for a way out like I was, shortcut keys specific to programs help a lot, but here are some special tools you might like:
For developers: Vim This...
FireMiddleFinger revised
Another version of the script from Monday’s post that doesn’t require you to download any extra programs.
Again, this is for OSX. Someday I might make a PC version of it, but given the state of Windows built-in proxy-ing capability (uses program-by-program connection settings, no packaged secure shell program), I may decide to make it a browser plug-in.
That’s actually not a...

FireMiddleFinger
FireMiddleFinger is an AppleScript for Mac OS X I hacked together mostly in response to FireSheep (by Seattle native Eric Butler a.k.a. codebutler). If you haven’t heard of it yet, you probably should. Encrypting your traffic is just a good idea anyway when on non-WPA-encrypted wireless networks.
Edit: Here’s why it’s a good idea! Let’s say you’ve connected to...

Today in Scary-But-Cool Hardware Voodoo
(c)2010 IEEE Design and Test of Computers
IEEE Computing Now published an excerpt today featuring an article by Yier Jin and Yiorgos Makris of Yale on “Hardware Trojans in Wireless Cryptographic ICs,” a subject that the government seems to be increasingly concerned about in the last couple of years. This is scary and voodoo because unlike the worms you’ll hear about in the...

SSH: ENCRYPT EFFING EVERYTHING!!!
Are you one of those people who steps out of the house in the morning, only to run back in, remembering that the government can use satellites to see your brain, therefore your thoughts?
Tinfoil hats for you. That will solve your problem. You may stop reading here.

Pythagorean Triples
You remember these from trigonometry, right?
A^2 + B^2 = C^2
TopCoder recently had an SRM (single round match) question involving triples, and on the wikipedia page I found out that they have some really weird/awesome voodoo-but-not properties:
At most one of a, b, c is a square.
Exactly one of a, b is odd; c is odd.
Exactly one of a, b is divisible by 3.
Exactly one of a, b is divisible by...

TopCoder Kicks Ass
I assume I am not the only one who has wished for a place to screw around on different computer puzzles for hours on end, trying new things and comparing my number of accrued solution points to those of other people until, one day, I may finally say “mine’s bigger.”
TopCoder.com is this magical place!!!
More after the jump!
This place has so many different ways to test your...

"private"
After a bit of debate with Evan during a faux interview today, I decided to test the mechanics of the ‘private’ keyword in Java. Turns out that it doesn’t just restrict access to one instance of a class but ANY object of the same class.
Check it out:
public class AccessTest {
public static void main(String[] args) {
A first = new A(42);
A second = new...
